Required Training & Certifications
Pender AUXCOMM requires that operators complete the following courses:
IS-100c - Introduction to the Incident Command System
IS-200c - Basic Incident Command for Initial Response
IS-700b - Introduction to the National Incident Management System
IS-800d - National Response Framework
All operators must hold a valid amateur radio license of general class or higher.
Required Knowledge & Skills
AUXCOMM operators should be proficient in these areas:
Proficiency in Incident Response Frameworks (including ICS & NIMS)
Operating a station effectively under changing conditions.
Utilizing HF digital data modes (e.g., PSK31, Winlink, VARA) for communication.
Operation and basic maintenance of Project 25 radios and knowledge of the VIPER radio system.
Maintaining a high standard of operational security throughout all operations.
Clearly and concisely communicating information over the radio.
Understanding your role in the incident, being respectful of others, and having strong interpersonal communication skills.
Maintaining a high level of situational awareness regarding surrounding events.
Effectively and efficiently solving any issues that arise during incidents.

Advanced ICS Courses (ICS-300 & ICS-400)
National Weather Service SKYWARN® Training*
All Hazards Auxiliary Communicator (AUXC)

How To Get Trained
ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 courses can be taken online via the FEMA website. Before taking these courses, operators should register for a FEMA Student Identification Number, as it will be required when taking the ICS online courses. It is also recommended that operators sign up for a North Carolina Training, Exercise, & Response Management System (NC TERMS) account as well.
